The CHA₂DS₂-VASc score adds up points for Congestive heart failure (1), Hypertension (1), Age ≥75 (2), Diabetes (1), prior Stroke/TIA/thromboembolism (2), Vascular disease (1), Age 65-74 (1), and Sex category female (1), producing a 0-9 score that stratifies annual stroke risk in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation.
Cardiologists, neurologists and primary care physicians use the score, endorsed by major cardiology guidelines (ESC, ACC/AHA), to decide whether a patient's stroke risk is high enough to justify long-term oral anticoagulation (warfarin or a DOAC) versus no antithrombotic therapy, weighing it alongside a separate bleeding-risk score like HAS-BLED.
