About this calculator

This calculator divides total cholesterol by HDL ("good") cholesterol to give the total-to-HDL ratio, then compares it against commonly cited risk thresholds — under 5 is generally considered desirable, and under 3.5 is considered optimal by many cardiology guidelines.

It's used by patients trying to make sense of a lab report's raw numbers, since the ratio captures cardiovascular risk more completely than looking at total cholesterol or LDL alone — a high HDL can offset an elevated total number, which the ratio reflects but a single number doesn't.
