About this calculator

Non-HDL cholesterol is calculated simply as total cholesterol minus HDL (“good”) cholesterol, which leaves everything else that carries cholesterol through the bloodstream in a form that can contribute to plaque buildup — LDL, VLDL, and other atherogenic lipoprotein particles combined. Because it captures all of those particles in a single subtraction, some clinical guidelines treat it as a more complete marker of cardiovascular risk than LDL cholesterol alone, particularly when triglycerides are elevated (a condition where LDL estimates from the standard Friedewald formula become less reliable).

This calculator takes your total cholesterol and HDL values from a lipid panel and returns non-HDL cholesterol along with the total-to-HDL ratio, another commonly referenced risk indicator. It's a way to see two additional risk figures directly from standard lab results, though interpreting them against target ranges is something to do with a clinician who knows your full risk profile.
