About this calculator

This calculator applies the Cornell voltage criteria, one of the most widely used ECG-based screening tests for left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH): sum the R-wave amplitude in lead aVL and the S-wave amplitude in lead V3, then compare against a sex-specific threshold — >28 mm (2.8 mV) in men and >20 mm (2.0 mV) in women, since men naturally tend to have higher baseline voltages.

Cardiologists use the Cornell criteria — alongside the older Sokolow-Lyon index — as a quick, low-cost bedside screen for LVH from a standard 12-lead ECG, before confirming with echocardiography if needed. It generally has better sensitivity than Sokolow-Lyon, particularly in patients who are obese or elderly.
