About this calculator

A CUSIP (Committee on Uniform Securities Identification Procedures) number is a 9-character code that uniquely identifies a North American security — the first 8 characters identify the issuer and issue, and the 9th is a check digit computed with a Luhn-like modulus-10 algorithm that weights and sums the numeric value of each preceding character. This validator recomputes that check digit from the first 8 characters and compares it to the 9th to confirm whether the code is structurally valid.

CUSIP validation is used by banks, brokerages, clearinghouses, and financial data systems to catch typos or transcription errors before a trade, settlement, or portfolio record references the wrong security — a single mistyped character in a CUSIP can point to an entirely different stock or bond, making the check digit an essential safeguard in financial data processing.
