About this calculator

The decibel is a logarithmic unit for comparing two power levels: dB = 10·log₁₀(P₂/P₁). Reversing the formula gives the power ratio directly from a dB value: ratio = 10^(dB/10); because power is proportional to the square of amplitude, the corresponding amplitude (voltage/pressure) ratio is 10^(dB/20).

Audio engineers use this to translate a mixer's gain or attenuation setting into an actual multiplication factor, RF and telecom engineers use it to work out how much a signal has been amplified or lost across an amplifier or cable run, and acousticians use it to relate sound level readings to real sound-power ratios.
