Discount Calculator
From original price and discount %: final price and savings.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool takes a price before discount and a percentage and works out three figures: discount amount = original × rate / 100, final price = original − discount amount and the saving, which equals the discount amount. The rate is a percentage, so 25 means 25%, not 0.25.
The original price must be zero or more. A negative rate is not rejected and works like a markup, raising the price. It applies one discount to the whole price: for two successive discounts (for example 20% then 10%) run the tool twice, using the first result as the new original price. They do not add up to 30%. Tax is not included.
Worked example
A jacket costs 80 and is on sale at 25% off. The discount amount is 80 × 25 / 100 = 20. The final price is 80 − 20 = $60.00, and you save $20.00. Check: 60 is 75% of 80, which is the share of the price you still pay when 25% comes off.
Common mistakes
- Adding two discounts together. 20% plus 10% off is not 30% off: after the first cut you take 10% off the lower price, which gives 28% in total.
- Entering the sale price as the original price, which shows the saving on the wrong base.
- Typing 0.25 instead of 25 for the rate, producing a 0.25% discount.
- Forgetting that VAT or sales tax may be added after the discount, so the checkout total can differ.
About this calculator
Given an original price and a percentage off, this calculator works out both the amount saved and the final price you would actually pay, using the simple relationship between a whole and a percentage of it. It takes the original price and the discount percentage; working the other direction, from an original and a sale price back to the percentage, is a separate calculation.
Shoppers reach for it during sales season to quickly judge whether a discounted item is genuinely a good deal, and for comparing two stores advertising different percentages off similar items, by running it once for each. Retail staff and small sellers also use it to set sale prices without doing the arithmetic by hand.
