About this calculator

Discretionary income is what's left of your income after covering essential expenses — housing, food, utilities, minimum debt payments, and similar necessities — the money you actually have freedom to save, invest, or spend on non-essentials. It's a more useful figure than gross or even net income for budgeting decisions, because it isolates the portion of your paycheck that's actually flexible.

This calculator takes your income and essential expenses and returns both the discretionary income left over each month and year, and its share of your total income. This figure also underpins certain income-driven student loan repayment calculations and general budgeting frameworks, where the share of income spent versus available for savings and discretionary spending is the key number being tracked.
