About this calculator

Disposable income is what's left of gross income after mandatory deductions — income tax, and typically things like social security/payroll tax and other required withholdings — are subtracted. It's distinct from discretionary income, which further subtracts essential living costs like rent and groceries; disposable income is simply gross minus taxes and deductions, the amount you actually have to spend or save.

This calculator takes your gross income, tax rate, and any other deductions and returns the disposable income figure. Households budgeting month to month, personal finance planners, and economists rely on disposable income as the base figure for calculating savings rates, debt-to-income ratios, and affordability — it's also the denominator national statistics agencies use when reporting the household savings rate.
