About this calculator

This calculator works out your net take-home pay — what actually lands in your bank account each pay period — starting from your gross pay and working through a flat income tax rate along with any pre-tax deductions (like traditional 401(k) or retirement contributions and some health insurance premiums, which lower the income your tax is calculated on) and post-tax deductions (like Roth retirement contributions or wage garnishments, which come out after tax is already applied).

The order matters: pre-tax deductions are subtracted from gross pay before the tax rate is applied, shrinking your taxable income and therefore your tax bill, while post-tax deductions are subtracted only after tax has already been calculated on the remaining amount.

Employees use this to sanity-check a paycheck or compare take-home pay across job offers with different salaries and benefits, and it's a common quick-estimate tool alongside more detailed payroll systems that account for progressive tax brackets and jurisdiction-specific withholding.
