About this calculator
A ship's displacement tonnage measures the mass of water it displaces while floating, which by Archimedes' principle equals the vessel's own weight — this converter uses the standard seawater density of 1.025 tonnes per cubic meter to translate between displacement tonnes and the cubic meters of seawater actually pushed aside, in either direction: m³ = tonnes ÷ 1.025, or tonnes = m³ × 1.025.
Naval architects, marine surveyors and shipping engineers use this conversion when working between a vessel's displacement (given in the ship's specifications, classification society records, or stability calculations) and its actual hull volume below the waterline, which is needed for drydock capacity planning, ballast calculations, and verifying a design against buoyancy requirements — seawater density is used rather than freshwater's 1.000 t/m³ because that's the medium nearly all displacement figures in naval architecture are specified against.
