About this calculator

Splitting a total in a given ratio means dividing it into parts whose sizes stay in the same proportion as the ratio itself. For a ratio a:b, the first share equals the total multiplied by a/(a+b), and the second share equals the total multiplied by b/(a+b) — the two fractions always add up to the whole, so nothing is lost or double-counted in the split.

This is a routine calculation in business partnerships dividing profit according to agreed ownership stakes (say, a 60:40 split between two founders), in recipes and industrial mixing where ingredients or chemicals must be combined in a fixed ratio regardless of batch size, in construction where cement, sand, and aggregate are proportioned for a concrete mix, and in inheritance or cost-sharing situations where an amount must be divided fairly according to a pre-agreed proportion rather than split evenly.

Enter your total amount and the two numbers of your ratio, and this calculator works out exactly how much each side receives.
