About this calculator

Two fractions are equivalent when they represent the same value even though their numerator and denominator differ — 1/2, 2/4 and 50/100 are all the same quantity written differently. You generate equivalent fractions by multiplying (or dividing) both the numerator and denominator by the same nonzero number, since that operation is mathematically the same as multiplying by 1 and therefore never changes the fraction's actual value.

This is a foundational concept taught in elementary and middle-school math because nearly every fraction operation depends on it: finding a common denominator to add or subtract fractions requires converting them to equivalent forms first, simplifying a fraction to lowest terms is the reverse process (dividing out the greatest common factor), and comparing fractions like 3/4 and 5/8 is only possible once they share a common denominator. Recipe scaling, unit conversion, and probability problems all lean on the same idea of rewriting a ratio without changing what it represents.

This calculator takes any fraction and generates a list of its equivalent fractions by scaling the numerator and denominator together, making it easy to see the pattern and find the specific equivalent form you need.
