About this calculator

Your Financial Independence (FI) number is the amount of invested savings that could, in theory, support your spending indefinitely without you needing to earn active income again. It's calculated by dividing your annual expenses by a chosen withdrawal rate — the percentage of your portfolio you plan to draw down each year, popularized by research into safe withdrawal rates such as the commonly cited 4% rule (equivalently, expenses multiplied by 25).

This calculator takes your annual spending and your target withdrawal rate and returns the portfolio size needed to reach financial independence. It's the central number in the FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) community's planning, used to set a concrete savings target and track progress toward it rather than treating retirement as a vague, undefined goal.
