About this calculator
This calculator applies the math behind the FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement: your savings rate — the share of take-home income you save rather than spend — determines how many years of expenses you accumulate each working year, while your expected real (inflation-adjusted) investment return compounds that stockpile over time. It combines these with a safe withdrawal rate, most commonly the 4% rule derived from the Trinity Study, which estimates the portfolio size (typically 25 times annual expenses) that can sustain withdrawals indefinitely without depleting principal.
Enter your savings rate and return assumptions and the calculator projects the number of years until your invested savings reach that target multiple of your spending — the point conventionally defined as financial independence. Individuals planning early retirement, financial independence bloggers, and anyone comparing how a higher savings rate versus a higher return shortens their working years use it to see, quantitatively, why the savings rate — not the investment return — is usually the dominant lever in reaching retirement sooner.
