About this calculator

This calculator applies Newton's second law, F = m × a, to find the force needed to accelerate a given mass, or to work backward and find acceleration or mass if the other two values are known. Force comes out in newtons when mass is in kilograms and acceleration in meters per second squared.

It's a staple of introductory physics homework, but the same formula is used by engineers sizing motors, brakes or structural supports, and by anyone estimating impact forces — for example how hard a falling object or a moving vehicle hits something.
