About this calculator
The kilogram-force (kgf) is a gravitational unit of force — the weight of a 1 kg mass under standard gravity — while the newton (N) is the SI unit defined from mass and acceleration directly. Because standard gravity is fixed at 9.80665 m/s², the conversion is exact: 1 kgf = 9.80665 N (about 2.2046 lbf).
Mechanical and structural engineers still encounter kgf on torque wrench specs, load cell ratings, and older European or Asian machine datasheets, and need to convert those figures to newtons to work with modern SI-based stress and force calculations.
