About this calculator

A gram-force (gf) is the weight of a one-gram mass under standard Earth gravity — a leftover unit from the older gravitational metric system, defined as 1 gf = 1 g × standard gravity (9.80665 m/s²) = 0.00980665 N, commonly rounded to 0.00981 N. In the CGS system, the same force also equals about 980.665 dynes.

The unit survives in fields where forces are small and intuitively easier to picture as a weight: spring-scale and force-gauge calibration, textile and paper tensile-strength testing (often rated in gram-force per denier or per unit width), pharmaceutical tablet hardness testing, and physics lab exercises, all of which need a quick conversion to the SI newton for use in formulas or reporting.
