About this calculator

Hay is sold by the bale, but bale size and weight vary wildly — a small square bale might weigh 40–60 lb while a large round bale can weigh 800–1,200 lb — so comparing prices bale-to-bale is misleading. The fix is to normalize to a common unit: Cost per ton = (Price per bale ÷ Bale weight in lb) × 2,000, which also gives cost per pound directly.

Horse owners, cattle ranchers, and hay brokers use this conversion to compare quotes from different sellers offering different bale formats, and to budget winter feed costs per animal based on typical daily hay consumption in pounds.
