About this calculator

Heart rate recovery (HRR) is the drop in heart rate from its peak during exercise to a fixed point afterward, most commonly measured at one minute post-exercise. It is calculated simply as peak heart rate minus heart rate one minute later, and reflects how quickly the parasympathetic (vagal) nervous system reasserts control once physical exertion stops.

Cardiologists and exercise physiologists use HRR as a marker of autonomic function and cardiovascular fitness: a drop of less than 12 bpm after one minute (in a standard treadmill protocol) is a well-established predictor of increased cardiovascular mortality, independent of workload achieved and traditional risk factors, first described in landmark research from the Cleveland Clinic. Athletes and coaches also track HRR informally as a fitness-improvement metric — a faster recovery generally signals better aerobic conditioning over time.

This calculator takes your peak heart rate during exercise and your heart rate one minute afterward, then returns the recovery value in beats per minute so you can compare it against clinical cutoffs or your own training trend.
