About this calculator

Stall bedding — most commonly wood shavings — needs to be deep enough to absorb urine, cushion the horse's legs and joints, and encourage the horse to lie down comfortably, with most stable managers targeting 4 to 6 inches of compressed depth over the full stall floor. Buying too little means constant top-ups and thin spots that let urine reach the floor; buying too much wastes money and storage space.

Because shavings are sold in compressed bags of a known volume, the amount needed is simply the stall's floor area multiplied by the target depth, converted to the coverage a standard bag provides. This calculator takes your stall area and desired bedding depth and returns the number of bags to buy, the same math barn managers use when ordering bedding by the pallet.
