About this calculator

An improper fraction has a numerator equal to or larger than its denominator (like 17/5), and converting it to a mixed number just applies integer division: dividing numerator by denominator gives a whole-number quotient, and the remainder over the original denominator becomes the leftover fraction — so 17/5 becomes 3 and 2/5, since 5 goes into 17 three times with 2 left over.

The fractional part is then reduced using the greatest common divisor of the remainder and denominator, so results are always shown in lowest terms alongside their decimal equivalent. Mixed numbers are the everyday form used in cooking measurements, carpentry and shop-class math, while improper fractions are what algebra and calculus prefer for multiplying and dividing, which is why converting between the two is a routine step in both classrooms and workshops.
