About this calculator

A mixed number like 2¾ combines a whole number with a proper fraction; converting it to an improper fraction (one where the numerator is larger than the denominator) follows a fixed rule: multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the numerator, and keep the same denominator — so 2¾ becomes (2×4 + 3)/4 = 11/4. Improper fractions are the form needed before multiplying or dividing fractions, since mixed numbers can't be multiplied directly without first combining the parts.

Students learn this conversion as a core arithmetic skill, and it comes up constantly outside the classroom too — scaling a recipe that calls for 1½ cups by 2.5x, calculating cut lengths in carpentry and construction where measurements are given in mixed inches, or working through any word problem where fractional quantities need to be combined or divided.
