About this calculator

In joint variation, a quantity z depends on the product of two (or more) other variables, written z = k·x·y, where k is a fixed constant found from one known data point. It differs from simple direct variation (z = kx) in that z now grows with two variables at once — doubling either x or y alone doubles z, but doubling both quadruples it. A concrete example is the area of a triangle, A = ½ · b · h: area varies jointly with base and height, and the constant here is simply ½.

Joint variation problems appear across algebra courses and in real physical relationships — the volume of a rectangular box varies jointly with its length, width, and height, and simple interest varies jointly with principal and time.
