About this calculator

Humans spend roughly a third of their lives asleep, and this calculator makes that abstract fact personal: it multiplies your average nightly sleep by the number of nights you have already lived, since your current age, to show how many years of your life so far have gone to sleep — and then projects the same math forward to your expected lifespan to show how many years of sleep still lie ahead.

The arithmetic is simple — average hours slept per night, divided by 24, times days lived or days remaining — but seeing it converted into whole years tends to land differently than seeing “8 hours a night” in isolation. Sleep researchers and science communicators often use exactly this kind of framing to make the case that sleep is not wasted time but a substantial, unavoidable chunk of a human lifespan that deserves the same planning as diet or exercise.

Enter your typical nightly sleep, your current age and your life expectancy to see both numbers: years already slept, and years still to come.
