How it is calculated

The tool counts calendar days between today's date and the target date you enter. Both are taken at midnight, the difference in seconds is divided by 86,400 and rounded to a whole day, and the weeks figure is days / 7 to two decimals. A date in the future gives a positive count, today gives 0, and a date in the past gives a negative count, meaning days since. The date can be written in any form PHP understands, such as 2026-12-25 or 25 December 2026; unreadable text returns nothing. Today is not counted, so tomorrow is 1. Time of day and time zone are ignored apart from the server's own date.

Worked example

On 16 October 2026, count the days until 25 December 2026. Rest of October after the 16th: 15 days. November: 30 days. December up to the 25th: 25 days. Total = 15 + 30 + 25 = 70 days. In weeks, 70 / 7 = 10.00. Because the count starts from today, running it on another day gives another number.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting the target day to be counted as well as today. The count is the difference, so today to tomorrow is 1.
  • Writing 03/04/2026 and not knowing whether it is read as March 4 or April 3; ISO form 2026-04-03 avoids the ambiguity.
  • Reading a negative number as an error. It means the date is already past.
  • Using it for working days. It counts all calendar days, including weekends and holidays.

It answers a simple but surprisingly easy-to-miscalculate question: exactly how far away is that date, in days?
