About this calculator

This calculator takes your current age and a target life-expectancy age, converts the remaining years into weeks, and divides by the roughly one weekend per week to give a rough count of how many weekends you have left — a simple arithmetic exercise popularized by essays and talks on how finite free time actually is once you subtract work and routine from a lifespan.

It's not a medical or actuarial prediction — actual life expectancy varies enormously by health, genetics and circumstance — but rather a perspective tool. People use a weekends-left estimate the way they'd use a countdown timer: as a nudge to prioritize how limited leisure time gets spent, plan trips and time with family sooner rather than later, and notice how quickly a seemingly large number of years shrinks into a much smaller, more tangible number of weekends.
