Next Birthday Countdown

See how many days until your birthday.

How it is calculated

The tool takes your date of birth and today's date, builds this year's birthday from the month and day, and counts the days until it. If this year's birthday has already passed, it moves it forward by one year. The age you are turning is the year of that coming birthday minus your birth year. Today counts as day zero, so on the birthday itself the countdown reads 0 days and the age is the one you are celebrating. The count uses real calendar days, so leap years are handled by the date functions. A 29 February birthday falls on 1 March in years that have no 29 February. The answer changes every day, because it is measured from the current date. Enter the birth date in year-month-day form.

Worked example

Take a birth date of 25 December 1990. Imagine today is 16 October 2026. This year's birthday, 25 December 2026, is still ahead, so no rollover is needed. Counting forward: 15 days left in October, 30 in November and 25 in December gives 70 days. The age being turned is 2026 − 1990 = 36. So the tool shows 70 days until the next birthday, when the person turns 36. On 26 December 2026 the same input would count towards 25 December 2027 and show 37.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the date in day-month-year order, which can swap the day and month or be rejected. Use year-month-day.
  • Entering today's date or the current year instead of the year of birth, which gives an age of 0 or 1.
  • Expecting the count to include or exclude the birthday day. Today is counted as zero, so tomorrow's birthday shows 1 day.
  • Reading a saved result later. The countdown is measured from the day you open it, so a number noted down last week is no longer correct.

About this calculator

This tool takes a birth date and today's date, then counts the exact number of days, weeks and months remaining until the next birthday, along with the age that will be turned. It automatically rolls the date forward to next year if the birthday has already passed this year, and accounts for leap years when the birthday falls on or near February 29.

People planning a birthday party or gift purchase, anyone curious how close they are to a milestone age like 18, 21 or 30, and parents tracking a child's upcoming birthday all use this instead of counting days on a calendar by hand.
