About this calculator

Mechanical power is the rate at which a ventilator transfers energy to a patient's respiratory system with each breath, combining the effects of tidal volume, respiratory rate, and the pressures needed to inflate the lungs. This calculator applies the simplified formula MP = 0.098 × RR × Vt × (Ppeak − 0.5 × (Pplat − PEEP)), expressed in joules per minute.

Mechanical power has become an important concept in critical care because higher values are associated with a greater risk of ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI), independent of any single setting like tidal volume or pressure alone. Intensivists and respiratory therapists managing patients with ARDS or on prolonged mechanical ventilation use it alongside driving pressure and other lung-protective metrics to help guide safer ventilator settings.
