About this calculator

MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) measures the energy cost of an activity relative to resting metabolism — sitting quietly is 1 MET, while brisk walking is around 3.5–4 METs. Calories burned are calculated as Calories = MET × body weight (kg) × duration (hours), a formula derived from the fact that 1 MET corresponds to roughly 1 kcal per kilogram of body weight per hour.

Personal trainers, dietitians and fitness apps use published MET values (from resources like the Compendium of Physical Activities) alongside a person's own weight and workout time to estimate calorie expenditure for specific activities such as cycling, swimming, or weightlifting, since actual burn depends heavily on body mass and effort duration rather than the activity name alone.
