About this calculator

The mileage deduction lets self-employed workers and certain employees write off business driving on their taxes using the standard IRS mileage rate (a per-mile cents rate the IRS updates annually — 67 cents per mile for business use in 2024, for example) as a simpler alternative to tracking and deducting actual vehicle expenses like gas, maintenance, insurance, and depreciation individually. Multiplying your qualifying business miles by the current rate gives your deduction amount, which then reduces taxable income at your marginal tax rate to produce your actual tax savings.

Freelancers, rideshare and delivery drivers, real-estate agents, and small-business owners who use a personal vehicle for work track their business mileage throughout the year (commuting to a regular workplace doesn't count, but driving between job sites, to client meetings, or for errands does) and use this calculator to see both the raw deduction and the resulting tax savings, which helps with quarterly estimated-tax planning as well as year-end filing.

This calculator takes your business miles driven, the standard mileage rate, and your marginal tax rate, and returns your total mileage deduction and estimated tax savings.
