About this calculator

NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis) is the energy you burn from everyday movement that isn't deliberate exercise — walking to the car, pacing during a phone call, taking the stairs, fidgeting. For most people NEAT accounts for a bigger swing in daily calorie burn than formal workouts do, which is why researchers like James Levine (who coined the term) found it explains much of the variation in weight gain between people eating the same diet.

This calculator estimates NEAT calories from your daily step count and body weight, since walking is the single largest and most trackable component of NEAT for most people. It's useful for anyone doing calorie tracking or weight management who wants a more complete picture of energy expenditure than “steps” alone gives them.
