About this calculator

A negative split means running the second half of a race faster than the first — the opposite of the common mistake of going out too fast and fading. Physiologically it keeps early effort comfortably below the pace that burns through limited glycogen stores and builds excess lactate, leaving more capacity available when fatigue would otherwise be setting in during the final miles.

Elite distance runners use negative or even splits deliberately: most modern marathon world records, including Eliud Kipchoge's, were run with the second half no slower than the first. This calculator takes your goal distance, target finish time and a chosen split percentage (how much faster the second half should be) and returns the exact pace to hold for each half, turning “run smart” into two concrete per-kilometer or per-mile numbers.
