About this calculator
Sleep scientists distinguish naps by which sleep stages they let you reach, because that determines how you feel afterward. A short 10–20 minute nap keeps you in light stages of sleep and lets you wake up quickly and clear-headed; push past about 30 minutes and you risk drifting into slow-wave (deep) sleep, waking mid-cycle with grogginess and disorientation known as sleep inertia. A full 90-minute nap, on the other hand, completes an entire sleep cycle — including REM sleep — and can leave you refreshed with memory-consolidation benefits similar to a short night's sleep, as long as you have the time to spare.
This calculator matches a nap length to your actual goal — a quick energy boost, avoiding sleep inertia, or a full recovery nap — and adds your personal time-to-fall-asleep on top, since the clock you should set is measured from when you lie down, not from when you actually drift off.
Shift workers, students cramming between classes, athletes fitting in recovery, and parents grabbing sleep between newborn feedings all use nap-timing guidance like this to avoid waking up worse than before they lay down.
