About this calculator

A wake window is the stretch of time a baby or toddler can comfortably stay awake between one sleep period and the next before overtiredness sets in and makes falling asleep harder rather than easier. Wake windows grow steadily with age: a newborn may only manage 45 to 60 minutes before needing to sleep again, while a toddler approaching preschool age can often stay awake for four to six hours between naps.

Parents and caregivers who follow baby-sleep guidance from sources like the Baby Sleep Site or Taking Cara Babies use age-based wake windows to time naps and bedtime before a baby crosses from tired into overtired, since an overtired baby typically fights sleep, wakes more during the night, and is harder to settle than one put down at the right moment. Daycare and nursery staff use the same age brackets to plan group nap schedules.

Enter your child's age in months and the calculator returns the wake window that is typical for that age, helping you time naps before overtiredness kicks in.
