About this calculator

Overtime and double-time pay exist because most wage-and-hour laws treat extra hours as worth more than ordinary ones: in the US, the Fair Labor Standards Act requires 1.5x the regular rate for non-exempt hours worked beyond 40 in a week, and many states or union contracts layer on 2x (double time) for hours beyond a daily threshold or work on holidays. Gross pay is the sum of three pieces — regular hours at the base rate, overtime hours at 1.5x, and double-time hours at 2x — each multiplied by the hourly rate and added together.

Hourly employees, payroll administrators and small-business owners use this breakdown constantly: workers want to confirm a paycheck matches the hours they actually worked, while employers use it to budget labor costs for shifts that run long or fall on premium days. Because overtime rules vary by jurisdiction and by whether the daily or weekly threshold applies first, keeping the three pay tiers separate — rather than blending them into one average rate — is what keeps the math defensible.

This calculator takes your regular, overtime and double-time hours along with your base hourly rate and returns the gross pay for each tier plus the total, so you can check a paycheck or plan a payroll run in seconds.
