About this calculator

Party planners commonly budget on the rule of thumb that an average adult drinks 1 alcoholic beverage per hour at a social gathering, so total beers needed roughly equals guests × hours × drinks-per-hour, adjusted up for hot weather or a younger crowd and down for a mixed bar with wine and cocktails. Since beer is typically bought by the case (24 cans/bottles) or the keg (a standard half-barrel keg holds about 165 twelve-ounce servings), the raw beer count then needs rounding up to whole cases or kegs.

Party and event hosts use this kind of estimate to avoid the two common failure modes — running out mid-party or buying far more than a couple of coolers can hold — by translating headcount and duration directly into a shopping-list quantity.
