This calculator divides the total patio or walkway area by the footprint of a single paver (its length × width) to get a base paver count, then adds a waste allowance — typically 5–10% for a simple rectangular layout, more for diagonal or curved patterns and cuts around edges — to account for breakage, trimming and pattern offsets.

DIY homeowners and landscapers use it before a materials run to avoid the common mistake of buying exactly the calculated count and running short mid-project once cut pieces and breakage are factored in, since most suppliers won't guarantee an exact dye-lot match on a second order placed later.
