About this calculator

A pinch is the informal cooking unit for what you can hold between thumb and forefinger — U.S. recipe convention fixes it at 1/16 teaspoon (about 0.3 mL), small enough that a scale can't weigh it reliably but too much to eyeball for potent spices like saffron, cayenne or baking soda. Because it isn't a legally standardized unit like the teaspoon or millilitre, cookbook authors and recipe-scaling software need a fixed ratio to convert it into something a measuring spoon can actually deliver.

Home cooks doubling or halving a recipe, professional chefs scaling a dish for a banquet, and recipe-database developers building portion calculators all rely on this pinch-to-teaspoon ratio to keep seasoning proportional when batch size changes.
