About this calculator

Parts per million (ppm) expresses concentration as ppm = (mass of solute / mass of solution) × 10⁶, a convenient unit for very dilute solutions where percentage would require awkward decimals (1 ppm equals 0.0001%). The calculator also converts the result to a percentage for comparison, since 10,000 ppm equals 1%.

Chemists and lab technicians use ppm to report dilute solution concentrations, water treatment plants and environmental scientists use it to measure contaminants like chlorine, lead, or dissolved minerals in drinking water, and agronomists use it to calculate fertilizer or pesticide dilution rates for crop spraying. Aquarium and hydroponics hobbyists also rely on ppm readings to keep nutrient or chemical levels in a safe range for fish and plants.
