About this calculator

This calculator applies the core time-value-of-money formula, PV = FV / (1 + r)ⁿ, to discount a future sum of money back to what it's worth today, given a discount rate (r) and number of periods (n) — the same principle behind the idea that a dollar today is worth more than a dollar in the future.

Finance students and analysts use it to value bonds, evaluate investment opportunities, and compare offers like a lump-sum settlement versus a future payout, while businesses use it in capital budgeting to decide whether a future cash flow justifies an investment made today. The result is highly sensitive to the chosen discount rate, so the calculator makes it easy to see how a small change in rate assumptions swings the present value.
