About this calculator

Pressure is defined as force applied perpendicular to a surface divided by the area over which it's distributed: P = F / A, typically expressed in pascals (Pa = N/m²) or psi (lb/in²) in imperial units. For the same applied force, a smaller contact area produces much higher pressure — which is why a sharp knife cuts easily (tiny contact area concentrates force) while snowshoes let you walk on snow without sinking (large area spreads force thin).

Physics students use this formula as one of the earliest applications of Newton's laws to real surfaces, while engineers use it constantly: mechanical engineers size hydraulic and pneumatic components, civil engineers check foundation bearing pressure against soil capacity, and product designers calculate contact pressure to avoid material deformation or failure. Enter any applied force and contact area to find the resulting pressure.
