About this calculator

This calculator finds the physical print size of a digital image from its pixel dimensions and print resolution, using size = pixels ÷ DPI (dots per inch), with the result converted to centimetres. DPI here really describes PPI (pixels per inch) at the point of printing — the higher the DPI a print size is calculated at, the smaller and sharper the physical print, since more pixels are packed into each inch; standard practice uses 300 DPI for photo-quality prints viewed up close and drops to 150 DPI or lower for large posters and banners meant to be seen from a distance.

Photographers use it to check whether an image file will print sharp at a chosen size before ordering prints, graphic designers use it to prepare files that meet a print shop's resolution requirements, and photo lab technicians use it to validate customer files ahead of production. Enter your image's pixel width and height along with the target DPI to get the maximum sharp print size.
