About this calculator
A digital image’s sharpness in print depends on its pixel density relative to physical size, expressed in dots per inch (DPI) or pixels per inch (PPI). The relationship is simple multiplication: required pixels = print dimension (inches) × target DPI — printing an 8×10 inch photo at the professional-quality standard of 300 DPI requires a 2400×3000 pixel image, while a large banner viewed from several feet away can look perfectly sharp at 100-150 DPI because viewing distance reduces how much resolution the eye can actually perceive.
Photographers and graphic designers run this calculation before sending a file to print to catch resolution shortfalls early — upscaling a low-resolution image after the fact only interpolates missing detail rather than truly adding it, so the image comes out visibly soft no matter how it’s processed. It’s equally essential for anyone ordering large-format prints, canvas wraps, or signage, where the DPI target is intentionally lower than a handheld photo print because the intended viewing distance is much greater.
