About this calculator

A progressive tax system taxes income in brackets rather than at one flat rate — each slice of income that falls within a bracket is taxed at that bracket's marginal rate, and only income above a threshold moves into the next, higher bracket. This means the top marginal rate never applies to your entire income, only to the portion that falls in the top bracket, which is why the effective tax rate (total tax divided by total income) is always lower than the top marginal rate.

This structure is used by most national income tax systems worldwide as a way to tax higher earners at a higher rate on their additional income while keeping the burden lighter on lower income levels. Understanding the bracket mechanics — rather than assuming one rate applies to all income — is one of the most common sources of confusion when people estimate their own taxes.

This calculator takes your income and two bracket thresholds/rates and returns the tax owed across both brackets along with your effective tax rate.
