About this calculator
Resting heart rate (RHR) — pulse measured while fully at rest, ideally first thing in the morning before getting out of bed — is one of the simplest available markers of cardiovascular fitness, since a well-conditioned heart pumps more blood per beat (a higher stroke volume) and therefore needs fewer beats per minute to circulate the same amount of blood. Rating tables compare a given RHR against age- and sex-specific norms, since typical resting rates and what counts as "athletic" shift with both.
Fitness trackers, coaches and health-conscious individuals monitor resting heart rate trends over weeks and months as a low-effort proxy for aerobic fitness, since a gradually declining RHR at rest is one of the more reliable signs that cardiovascular conditioning is improving, while a sudden rise can flag overtraining, illness or poor recovery.
This calculator takes your resting heart rate along with your age and sex and rates your cardiovascular fitness against normative bands.
