About this calculator

Every vehicle roof has a manufacturer-specified maximum static load — the total weight it can safely bear while parked, which is typically far higher than the dynamic load rating that applies while driving — and the usable remaining capacity is simply roof load limit − (roof rack weight + cargo weight). Exceeding it risks roof panel damage, compromised structural integrity in a rollover, and in the worst case a rack or cargo box failure at speed.

Drivers loading roof boxes, bike racks or cargo carriers use this subtraction before every trip because the rack itself eats into the weight budget before a single item of cargo is loaded — a roof rack alone can weigh 20–40 lbs, meaning the manufacturer’s quoted roof capacity overstates what’s actually left for luggage, bikes or kayaks once the rack system is mounted.

This calculator takes your vehicle’s roof load rating, roof rack weight and cargo weight, and returns exactly how much more weight your roof can safely carry.
