A vehicle's towing setup involves several separate limits that all have to be respected simultaneously: the trailer's gross weight (trailer plus everything loaded in or on it) must stay under the tow vehicle's rated towing capacity, but the vehicle's total weight — its own curb weight, passengers, cargo and the trailer's tongue weight — must also stay under its Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR). The "margin" is simply the remaining headroom between what you're actually towing/carrying and these rated maximums, expressed as remaining pounds and as a percentage of capacity used.

This margin matters because manufacturer towing ratings already assume worst-case conditions like a full fuel tank, driver only, and no aftermarket accessories — real-world towing setups eat into that margin fast once you add passengers, cargo, hitch weight and accessories, and towing over capacity degrades braking distance, handling stability and transmission/engine longevity, and can void insurance coverage in a crash.
