About this calculator

Rowing ergometers like the Concept2 relate power and pace with a cube law rather than a linear one, since power output is proportional to boat speed cubed — the standard formula is pace in seconds per 500m = (2.80 ÷ watts)^(1/3) × 500, meaning that a fairly small increase in pace requires a disproportionately large increase in power, and vice versa.

Rowing coaches and athletes use watts-to-split conversion to translate power-based training targets from a workout plan into the pace number that shows on the erg monitor, since many structured training plans are written in watts, which reflect actual work output more consistently than pace does, while athletes are used to thinking and pacing in terms of 500m splits. It’s also used to compare erg scores across different machines or protocols on a common basis.

This calculator takes a target power in watts and returns the equivalent 500m split time.
