About this calculator

Rowing pace is conventionally expressed as time per 500 meters, and stroke rate (strokes per minute) combines with distance per stroke to determine that pace — for a fixed distance per stroke, rowing at a higher stroke rate produces a faster split, while for a fixed stroke rate, increasing the distance covered per stroke (through better technique or gearing on the erg) also speeds up the split, so the two variables trade off against each other.

Competitive and recreational rowers, both on-water and on ergometers, use target stroke rate and split calculations to plan workouts around a specific pace goal — a steady-state row might target a lower stroke rate for a sustainable split, while race pace or interval work targets a higher rate — and comparing actual distance per stroke against the target reveals whether technique or rating needs adjusting to hit the intended split.

This calculator takes your target distance, time and distance per stroke, and returns your required stroke rate and the corresponding 500 m split.
